Role Overview


The LifeMoves Education team is looking for dynamic and enthusiastic Summer Camp Leads to manage LifeMoves Summer Adventure Camp, a summer day camp program for unhoused children ages 5-14 living in LifeMoves shelters. Summer Adventure Camp is an important component of LifeMoves’ model of comprehensive supportive services and its mission to help families break the cycle of homelessness and return to self-sufficiency. Camp supports each child’s growth and education, while allowing parents to focus on securing work and permanent housing. Activities and field trips are organized around weekly themes—such as outer space, sports, environmental sustainability, technology, and art—for a fun and educational experience.
Program Logistics

Location: This is an in-person volunteer opportunity. Camp Leads will be at one of our family shelters, which are located throughout the Bay Area in Menlo Park, San Mateo, Daly City, or San Jose.

Time Commitment: 7 Weeks

Dates: June 20th - August 9th

Orientation and Training: June 20th - June 28th
  • Orientation (June 20th)
  • Summer Camp Deep Dive Training (June 21st - June 28th)
Summer Adventure Camp: July 1st - August 2nd
  • Camp runs from Monday through Wednesday (10:00 AM - 3:00 PM)
  • Monday-Wednesday: On-Site Camp Days
  • Friday: Optional Weekly Virtual Check-in at 11:00 AM/Team Bonding Opportunities
Camp Debriefs, Deconstruction Process, and Data Collection: August 5th - August 9th

Compensation: Unpaid, Volunteer

Supervisors: Children's Services Coordinator, Director of Education, and Education Initiatives Manager

Requirements, Responsibilities, Outcomes, and Camp Sites


Role Requirements & Preferred Skills
  • High School Seniors and College Students
  • Experience working with school-aged children
  • Leadership experience amongst peers
  • Creative planning and activity design, with excellent follow through

  • Must be able to follow COVID-19 safety protocols and procedures

  • Must be able to show proof of completed COVID-19 Vaccination

  • Diligent work ethic, positive attitude, and a desire to learn about LifeMoves’ mission of ending homelessness

  • Ability to enforce rules to keep children safe

  • Proactive self-starter, ability to work independently

  • Ability to work collaboratively and professionally with volunteers, donors, vendors, and clients

Role Responsibilities
  • Attend and complete LifeMoves Onboarding and Volunteer Lead Trainings
  • Manage a revolving staff of 5-15 high-school-aged volunteers on-site and on weekly field trips
  • Support Children's Services Coordinators in planning and overseeing activities that center on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) topics
  • Create a safe, engaging, and trauma-informed learning environment
  • Provide structure, guidance, and learning objectives for weekly field trips
  • Support Nutrition Interns in overseeing the organization and distribution of daily meal program
  • Respond quickly and calmly to any emergency or crisis at Summer Adventure Camp
  • Collect and submit daily attendance

Learning Outcomes
  • Leadership experience in managing all sides of a summer program for underserved populations
  • Experience designing and implementing programming for un-housed children
  • Insight into the needs of un-housed children and how adverse experiences impact long-term outcomes
  • Exposure to senior staff and the operations of a leading nonprofit organization
  • Networking opportunities for career development
  • CPR and crisis management training
